Another Louis Malo

It has been a long time since I made a posting here, I have been so busy working on a post-graduate diploma in genealogical studies (one class left) and trying to keep my business alive that I found myself with little spare time for personal blogging.

Today I feel a bit of relief in that I am finally making a long overdue  post. I was inspired by some misinformation I came across yesterday on Find a Grave for Louis Malo (1858 – 1938). This Louis' spouses were Héloïse Provost and Annie Cloe Julius. Louis was born at St-Marc-sur-Richelieu, Verchères, Quebec, and died at Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

I found the headstone gave Louis' birth date as 1867, and who ever made the Find a Grave site gave his birth date as 1870. Nether of those dates are quite accurate.

Louis' parents were Jean Louis Ayet dit Malo (1837 – 1905) and Marie Julienne Forand (1835 – 1900).  Louis' baptism record indicates that he was baptized 9 March 1858.

Just as a side note, I have not traced Louis' first wife's family, so I am not implying anything, but just to say that I know that the Provost surname is associated with the descendants of Roch Mantioubeouich and Outchibahanoukoueou. Roch's daughter, Marie Olivier Manitouabeouich dit Sylvestre married Martin Prévost. Provost is one of the surname variations of Prévost. Well documented descendants meeting particular requirements can become members of the Nulhegan Tribe Abenaki Nation of Vermont, a state recognized Native American Indian tribe. Not all  Prevosts/Provosts are descended from Martin and Marie Olivier, but the couple does have many living descendants.

Louis Malo and Sarah (Harriett) Vandale Family Revisited

Tom Brummett sent me the information below on the Louis Malo and Sarah/Harriett/Henriette Vandal family. Thanks Tom! 

Elmira (Lafond) Malo, spouse of Louis Napoleon Malo, date of death 26 February 1949, burial Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester, MA. Source Worcester, MA death records 1949, #466

Louis Napoleon Malo marriage to Marie Elmire Lafond - 10 September 1886 - Pomfret, Windham, Connecticut. He list his age as 22, she as 21. She misstated her age to avoid parental consent. No license exist, just index entry as CT did not require certificates to be filed until 1888.

1872 naturalization record is for a different Louis Malo.  I researched the Voluntown vitals and a Louis with a different named wife had children there. (Kim’s Note:  the Louis Malo in Voluntown moved to Massachusetts, he married Marie Alexandrine Herbert)

He and Henriette were in Brimfield, MA in March 1867 as she gave birth to daughter Ellen who died in Putnam in April 1868.

Still at a wall for Louis Malo’s parents names - death certificate list names as "unknown", His marriage took place 3 Sept. 1859 in Putnam, Ct, recorded as general index entries only (no parent info) as CT did not require certificates to be filed until 1888.  St. Mary’s Curch, Putnam, published records start in 1866.  Still some hope there as I found out the church had a mission known as the "Quinnebaug Hall" where they held services, need to find out from the diocese if those records exist and will they share them. 

I suspect Louis came from the St. Ours/Sorel, Richelieu area of Quebec.  Many of the town and church records list that as where various community members came from.  This is common for the mill villages, as the textile mills advertised for workers from Quebec and they seemed to avoid areas where other mills were advertising (honor among thieves I suppose).

Harriet/Henriette Vandale - born 24 May 1850 in St. Ours as Hermine to Pierre Vandal (no 'e', that is a U.S. name variation) and Angeline Poncy dit Dauphine.  I have no idea where Sarah came from in the 1860 Census.

Louis Napoleon Malo - I have birth, children and many residences and occupations, no death yet.  I think it will be in Otsego county NY, because he and Annie Mary are there in 1940 and searches on her indicate she was from there as a young girl/woman.

Elmire Lafond - as she is not a direct descendent, my work has centered on her relationship with Louis N. Malo I have searched in several northeast CT towns and as yet have not located a marriage, theirs may turn out to be a common law marriage.  I have no death date/location yet, but I am convinced it will be Worcester, MA as two of her daughters lived their later years there (Elmire Malo Boivin is buried there).

Elmire Malo Boivin (Aug 1890, Ipswich, MA) - if some researchers have trouble locating her, that's because she was placed with Herod & Adeline Vandal Talbot (her great aunt & uncle) early in life to be raised as their own (see 1890 Census, Thompson, CT. she is 9 years old and listed as their daughter).  I have her vitals from birth to grave and all confirm her identity

Malo Families in Lewiston, Maine

Salutations Malo Cousins!

Recently I have been researching the Lewiston, Maine Malos.  One thing I noticed on ancestry.com was that there was a lot of confusion on this line so I thought I would relay that line here and I request that anyone who has information to add to this Malo line or if there are corrections I need to make, please message me below.  I do have 5^th and 6^th generations, but I have omitted them here for privacy.  

The Lewiston Malo line originates from two sons of Pierre Hayet dit Malo (1810-1899) and Charlotte Amiot (1818 – 1881). These sons are: 1. Louis Pierre Hayet dit Malo (1843-1894) and 2. Charles Hayet dit Malo  (1854-1914). These brothers emigrated from Quebec to Lewiston, Maine.

There are quite a few points of confusion on this line. In this blog I will look at what seems to be the three biggest points of confusion surrounding the Lewiston Malos.  That is, four Joseph E Malos all born around the same time, Doris Malo, and where Jean Baptiste Stanislaus Malo was born. 

The main point of confusion is the four Joseph E Malos as they have been mixed up in various trees on ancestry.com. I wanted to delineate these four Josephs here. Two of these Josephs are not from this line, but they have been confused with it. I hope this will lead to some conversation as to the details of these Malo cousins:  

1.      Joseph Emerilde Malo b. 1898 in Lewiston, ME (death date unknown). Though his birth record indicates his parents were Stanislaus B Malo (1873 – 1956) and Marie Emelina Caron (1877 – 1969) he does not show up on the 1900 census with his family  He may have died as an infant since no other record was found for him.

2.      Joseph Emery Malo b. 1898 in MA. According to the 1930 and 1940 census he lived in Searsport, ME. He died in Searsport, ME 1963. His parents were Emery Malo (b. 1872 - 1932) and Rose Anna Goulet (1870 – 1912). Though not a Lewiston Malo, Joseph Emery is a cousin of these other Josephs and he has been mixed up with them in some family trees on ancestry.com. Joseph Emery is descended from Jean Baptiste Stanislas Hayet dit Malo, who just happens to be the the brother of Pierre Hayet dit Malo mentioned above. Joseph Emery's wife was Rose Mary Socea.

3.      Joseph E Malo was born 1898 in Canada and in 1940 was living in Seattle, Washington.  His parents are currently unknown to me. Though not a Lewiston Malo, this Joseph E Malo has been mixed up with the Lewiston Malos in some family trees on ancestry.com.

4.      Joseph Emile Malo (1902 -1977) was born in Lewiston, ME, son of Louis Malo (1871 – 1938) and Marie Caroline Turcotte (1872- 1957). He has also been confused in the various trees on ancestery.com. His spouse is a point of confusion in her own right. According to the Maine marriage record his spouse was M. B. Lessard. The 1930 census gives her name as Blanche. According to this record, Blanche was born in 1906 in Canada. Many people have Joseph's spouse as Marie Rose Alma Lessard also born in Canada abt.1906, or they have listed both Blanche (no last name) and Marie Rose Alma Lessard. I found this confusing as there is only one marriage record for Joseph Emile on ancestrty.com and at familysearch.org. These two Lessard girls had different parents so they are not the same person. It could be that Joseph married twice, but I am doubtful of that. Perhaps someone found a second marriage record for him offline.  

The second point of confusion I want to report on is that of Doris Malo. Doris is the granddaughter of Stanislaus B Malo and Marie Emelina Caron and lived with them in 1940. On various family trees, Some people report her as Dolly, others as Doris, and some people have her as Dolly Doris Bernice Malo, daughter of Louis Edward Stanislas Malo (son of Stanislaus B.) and Marie Anne Vermette/Mariann. I was not sure at first if Dolly and Doris were the same person or two different people as I had not found a birth record for Doris, Dolly or a Doris Dolly yet. I did find three marriage indexes for Doris. A descendant of Doris said that Doris and Dolly are the same person and that Doris had a brother named Robert G.  Marie Anne Vermette parents were Edward Vermette and Demerise Demers. Demerise's parents are believed to Evangeliste Demers and Adele Boucher. 

The birth record below should resolve the third point of confusion. This record is for Jean Baptiste Stanislaus Malo, better known as Stanislaus B. Malo, the one mentioned above. Though most people on ancestry.com have him born in Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine, USA, he was born in St-Damase, Québec, Canada. Next to the birth record is a photo of Marie Florida Malo, sister of Jean Baptiste Stanislaus Malo.

Have you hit a brick wall with your Malo genealogy? I would not be surprised if you have because I have been stuck many times searching for Malos in New England and Canada. I discuss my most recent state of "stuckness" below.  If you are stuck. try spelling out Malo phonetically several different ways and use those variants to search with. Where I Continue to be Stuck

I am still trying to break through the brick wall I mentioned in a previous post and I hope someone can help me! I am searching for the parents of Louis Mao married to Sarah Vandal (also given as Harriett Vandale). I am not sure why on some census she is listed as Sarah, and Harriett on others, as they appear to be the same person. Though there are some discrepancies in the documents, I think this is the same family, please tell me what you think. Elmira La Fond and Louis Napoleon Malo

Cousins de Malo de Salutations!

I noticed on ancestry.com, that there were quite a few people with Elmira La Fond in their tree but they did not have her marriage. She was married to Louis Napoleon Malo, the son of Louis Malo and Sarah Vandal who are mentioned in the previous blog.

Elmira’s details are:

Elmira’s parents were:

Elmira's birth record is posted below.

Elmira and Louis Napoleon had three children that are all late, the last living child passing on in 2000 at the age of 95.

Elmira and Louis Napoleon divorced and I have not been able to find any other records for her.

Louis Napoleon remarried Mary Annie Olds b. 1875.  I have no children for this couple. Mary Annie Olds parents were:

• Annie Mary Shears

Malo Brick Walls

Greetings Malo Cousins and Researchers!

As you know from my previous post that my interest in Malo family history is the Malos that emigrated from Quebec to New England in the 1800’s. I have been trying to tie this New England Malo line all together and taking each family line back up the family tree to Jean Hayet dit St Malo and Catherine Galbrun.

Currently I have 1,230 people in the Malo New England tree. The most recent branch I have added is that of Adelard Ayette Malo married to Euphrosine Marcaurele. They originated in Quebec and immigrated to Connecticut.

What are your Malo research interests and what brick walls have you run into? Let us know so that we can help each other break through the walls. My current brick wall is: who were the parents of Louis Malo b. abt. 1838 in Quebec and passed on 1908 in Worcester, MA.
