The Wives of Honore Malo

Bonjour Cousins!

The other day I was searching for my great uncle, Elzear Malo, from Massachusetts. I found an Elzear in King, Washington.  I was pretty excited, thinking he must have moved ‘west.’ I found though this was not the same person. However, given this was the first Malo family I found in Washington, it was still an interesting find!

On his Washington death record his mother was given as “Marie Trudeau.”

Washington, Deaths, 1883-1960 about Elzear Peter Malo
Name:
Elzear Peter Malo
Gender:
Male
Birth Date:
abt 1875
Death Date:
3 Oct 1955
Age at Death:
80
Death Location:
Seattle, King, Washington
Father:
Malo
Mother:
Marie Trudeau
Record Source:
Washington State Death Records

His marriage record from Quebec gave Elzear's parents as “Honore Malo” and “Marie Trudeau.”

Great, that was easy! However, in searching for records for Honore, I found some people had him with one wife, Marie Treadu, and they had some or all of the children listed below. I was able to verify them on various censuses:
  •        Marie Liduvine Malo 1874 –
  •        Elzear Malo 1875 – 1955
  •        Blandine Malo 1878 –
  •        Louis Henri Malo 1879 –
  •        Daniel Simon Malo 1881 –
  •        Philippe Augustin Malo 1883 –
  •        Luce Anna Malo 1885 –
Other researchers had a second wife for Honore named "Alphonsine Bourdeau" and they had the following children for the couple:
  •      Joseph  Placide Malo 1889 –
  •      Joseph Fidèle Candide Malo 1894 –
  •       Euclide Malo 1895 –
  •       Joseph Esioff Malo 1898 –

I noted their birth years, and after having viewed some census records, I realized that Alphonsine could not have been the mother of these children.  This is because on the 1901 census Honore was a widow.

It was not until the 1911 census that Alphonsine appears as his wife.

This means the children that had been attributed to Honore and Alphonsine would actually be the children of Honore and another spouse. I searched around for more records for Honore and came across a marriage record for him and Alexandrine Lemure.

It seems these children would be the children of Alexandrine Lemure. It was possible that she passed on and Honore remarried, so I searched for records for the children which confirmed that their mother was Alexandrine Lemure. Below is the marriage record for  Euclide Malo

Case solved.

Here is the family group sheet thanks to Pierrette Despots.

Malo Families in Lewiston, Maine

Salutations Malo Cousins!

Recently I have been researching the Lewiston, Maine Malos.  One thing I noticed on ancestry.com was that there was a lot of confusion on this line so I thought I would relay that line here and I request that anyone who has information to add to this Malo line or if there are corrections I need to make, please message me below.  I do have 5th and 6th generations, but I have omitted them here for privacy.

The Lewiston Malo line originates from two sons of Pierre Hayet dit Malo (1810-1899) and Charlotte Amiot (1818 – 1881). These sons are: 1. Louis Pierre Hayet dit Malo (1843-1894) and 2. Charles Hayet dit Malo  (1854-1914). These brothers emigrated from Quebec to Lewiston, Maine.

There are quite a few points of confusion on this line. In this blog I will look at what seems to be the three biggest points of confusion surrounding the Lewiston Malos.  That is, four Joseph E Malos all born around the same time, Doris Malo, and where Jean Baptiste Stanislaus Malo was born.

The main point of confusion is the four Joseph E Malos as they have been mixed up in various trees on ancestry.com. I wanted to delineate these four Josephs here. Two of these Josephs are not from this line, but they have been confused with it. I hope this will lead to some conversation as to the details of these Malo cousins:
1.      Joseph Emerilde Malo b. 1898 in Lewiston, ME (death date unknown). Though his birth record indicates his parents were Stanislaus B Malo (1873 – 1956) and Marie Emelina Caron (1877 – 1969) he does not show up on the 1900 census with his family  He may have died as an infant since no other record was found for him.
2.      Joseph Emery Malo b. 1898 in MA. According to the 1930 and 1940 census he lived in Searsport, ME. He died in Searsport, ME 1963. His parents were Emery Malo (b. 1872 - 1932) and Rose Anna Goulet (1870 – 1912). Though not a Lewiston Malo, Joseph Emery is a cousin of these other Josephs and he has been mixed up with them in some family trees on ancestry.com. Joseph Emery is descended from Jean Baptiste Stanislas Hayet dit Malo, who just happens to be the the brother of Pierre Hayet dit Malo mentioned above. Joseph Emery's wife was Rose Mary Socea.
3.      Joseph E Malo was born 1898 in Canada and in 1940 was living in Seattle, Washington.  His parents are currently unknown to me. Though not a Lewiston Malo, this Joseph E Malo has been mixed up with the Lewiston Malos in some family trees on ancestry.com.
4.      Joseph Emile Malo (1902 -1977) was born in Lewiston, ME, son of Louis Malo (1871 – 1938) and Marie Caroline Turcotte (1872- 1957). He has also been confused in the various trees on ancestery.com. His spouse is a point of confusion in her own right. According to the Maine marriage record his spouse was M. B. Lessard. The 1930 census gives her name as Blanche. According to this record, Blanche was born in 1906 in Canada. Many people have Joseph's spouse as Marie Rose Alma Lessard also born in Canada abt.1906, or they have listed both Blanche (no last name) and Marie Rose Alma Lessard. I found this confusing as there is only one marriage record for Joseph Emile on ancestrty.com and at familysearch.org. These two Lessard girls had different parents so they are not the same person. It could be that Joseph married twice, but I am doubtful of that. Perhaps someone found a second marriage record for him offline.
The second point of confusion I want to report on is that of Doris Malo. Doris is the granddaughter of Stanislaus B Malo and Marie Emelina Caron and lived with them in 1940. On various family trees, Some people report her as Dolly, others as Doris, and some people have her as Dolly Doris Bernice Malo, daughter of Louis Edward Stanislas Malo (son of Stanislaus B.) and Marie Anne Vermette/Mariann. I was not sure at first if Dolly and Doris were the same person or two different people as I had not found a birth record for Doris, Dolly or a Doris Dolly yet. I did find three marriage indexes for Doris. A descendant of Doris said that Doris and Dolly are the same person and that Doris had a brother named Robert G.  Marie Anne Vermette parents were Edward Vermette and Demerise Demers. Demerise's parents are believed to Evangeliste Demers and Adele Boucher.

The birth record below should resolve the third point of confusion. This record is for Jean Baptiste Stanislaus Malo, better known as Stanislaus B. Malo, the one mentioned above. Though most people on ancestry.com have him born in Lewiston, Androscoggin, Maine, USA, he was born in St-Damase, Québec, Canada. Next to the birth record is a photo of Marie Florida Malo, sister of Jean Baptiste Stanislaus Malo.

              Marie Florida Malo (1887-1978)

The census below is the 1930 census with Joseph Emery Malo located in Searsport, Maine, USA

Eugene Ayet dit Malo and the French Prairie

Good Morning to all my French Canadian Cousins!

First I have to say thanks to Record Click for allowing me to double post this blog that I originally titled The French Prairie - A Hidden Piece of Oregon History. I was working on a family tree with roots in Oregon last month and I came across a Malo family while searching through the 1895 Oregon census. I was a bit surprised because the various Malo branches that left Quebec generally immigrated to New England. Being a Malo family researcher I just had to figure out how Eugene Malo wound up in Gervais, Oregon living on the French Prairie, and who his parents were.

Anyone who has studied American history knows about the Oregon Trail. Did you know that before the pioneers came to Oregon via the Oregon Trail, there was already a settlement in the Willamette Valley known as the French Prairie? Even the State of Oregon on their Oregon History website that begins with prehistory of Oregon, had failed to mention this community except as two small blurbs. No mention of the people of the French Prairie, who they were, or the role they played in Oregon history. I just had to find out!

The original European settlement on the French Prairie was populated by French Canadians, Acadians, and Metis people from Quebec and the Red River Valley. While the Americans were busy with the War of 1812, the North West Company brought them there in 1813 as fur trappers under the auspicious of the Willamette Trading Post. By 1821 the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) absorbed the North West Company and took over the Willamette Trading Post. If you had ancestors that lived in the French Prairie community, you may find records about them in the Manitoba archives as the HBC donated their records to the province of Manitoba.

Coming across this lapse of history on the official State of Oregon website it made me wonder what else about Oregon history was hidden. As a descendant of the Red River Valley community, Acadians and Amerindians, it occurred to me genealogy and politics were intrinsically linked. I have this urge to advocate for my ancestors buried there on the French Prairie, so far away from home and loved ones. The critical role they played in the history of Oregon should not be swept away for the more quixotic notion of pioneers and wagon trains. These pioneers were amazing and courageous, but none more so than the settlers in the French Prairie community. These French Canadian and Metis settlers paved the way for the pioneers. To know more about the French Prairie visit the website of the St. Paul Mission Historical Society.

Why Eugene Malo came to Oregon is still a mystery to me. Maybe if I dig a bit deeper I will find out. What I do know is that he is my 5thcousin. He first arrived in Oregon at the age of 17 in 1876, he is back with his family in Quebec in 1881, then he arrived in Oregon again in 1882 at the age of 22, and also in 1888 at the age of 29. He married Eulalie Foisy, who was born on the French Prairie, daughter of Medard Godard Foisy b. 1816 in Quebec d. 1880 on the French Prairie, and Marie Anne Delard 1833 – 1908, born and died on the French Prairie. Eugene and Eulalie had nine children. I found his obituary and a gravesite photo on the Find-a-Grave website. I posted his genealogy below.
